The Degenerates

Our fall Musikiwest concert will be on November 10th in our home venue: SandBox, Sand City. In this program entitled The Degenerates we will explore the works of composers categorized as such by the Nazi regime for the color of their skin or their religion. The inspired String Quartet No. 2 of Florence Price will be shared along with string Quartet No. 1 in A major by Alexander Zemlinsky and String Quartet No. 1 in E flat major by Felix Mendelssohn. We are extremely grateful to Yellow Brick Road for their generous grant in support of this concert and our “scripted open rehearsals” in the Monterey Public Schools.

Guided by Something More Powerful – Tone & Texture Winter Solstice

Limited seating for this intimate evening.

Jazz harp legend Destiny Muhammad presents her new work “Guided by Something More Powerful”, an improvised sonic suite inspired by the art of Rosie Lee Tomkins.

Rosie Lee Tomkins (1936–2006) is widely considered one of the most brilliant and inventive quiltmakers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Her reputation has grown to the point where her work is no longer considered solely within the context of quilting, but celebrated among the great American artistic achievements of our time. Jazz harpist, Destiny Muhammad, her band members: and spoken word arrtists have created an improvised sonic suite entitled “Guided by Something More Powerful” inspired by the work of Rosie Lee Tomkins. This tradition of African American Quilting will also be explored with music and spoken word based upon the quilting of Faith Ringgold and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. We invite you to share your wishes, prayers, intentions and reflections on textiles that you can either bring yourself or use what we will provide. These community shared thoughts will then be woven together culminating in a multi cultural quilt of “Light Co-exisitng with Darkness”.

Destiny Muhammad – Harpist
Leon Joyce – Jr Percussonist
Tammy Lynne Hall – Pianist
Arthur Chico Lopez – Upright Bassist
Devorah Major – Poetess
